"At a glance, Grusnick's debut title is a lurid, dark-hearted treasure hunt, but even more than that, it's a love letter to his adopted hometown told through the prism of a gritty, grimy crime novel.

Capturing a sense of place ain't easy, and when it comes to a city as distinctive as L.A., it's easy to fall back on the simple name-checking of landmarks and monuments. ("Oh, look! There's the Hollywood sign!") Grusnick resorts to no such cheap tricks, constructing memorable scenes throughout his book. A scene set in one of the city's best-known graveyards still lingers with me.

Oh, and did I mention there's a crackling mystery happening here, too? You bet there is. Grusnick's two leads -- a hapless police detective and an enterprising homeless dude -- collide in a plot that combines equal parts CHINATOWN and THE WIRE. (Spoiler alert: Real estate is still a deadly business, and our nation's unspoken caste system is still a moral hellscape.) Grusnick also happens to write sparkling prose."

"Instead of the usual musing about Los Angeles, glitz and glamour, the Hollywood Sign, fancy famous people and entitlement, Brad Grusnick writes about the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles. He delves deep into the people and places no one talks about- almost a subversive love letter to the underbelly of Los Angeles, which I found fantastically interesting. Grusnick is so descriptive in his words that you can almost smell some of the places and people he writes about! The story itself is exciting- a real crime noir and the book was impossible to put down once you begin. Every character leapt off the page. People don't write books like this anymore and I cannot wait for his next one. BUY THIS BOOK."

"A unique spin on an old genre that takes you deep into a class of folk we think very little about or of. A fun and interesting look at the dangers, politics, and organization of the homeless community set against a neo-noir backdrop. What's not to like? Seriously, tell me....I'm waiting..."
